"I found a book I wished I'd read as a teen,"No Weigh: A Teen's Guide to Positive Body Image, Food, and Emotional Wisdom," coauthored by three teen experts: adolescent medicine physician Dr. Shelley Aggarwal, eating disorder therapist Signe Darpinian and registered dietitian Wendy Sterling. Though intended for teens, the book resonated with me both individually and as a parent. In March, this trio collaborated on a down-to-earth guide for parents. "Raising Body Positive Teens: A Parent's Guide to Diet-Free Living, Exercise and Body Image" has changed the narrative in my head and household, as I support my teen, tween and 7-year-old to cultivate a balanced relationship with food and body.

A ‘wellness culture’ that robs us of food freedom.

Many of the trends that compose wellness culture — intermittent fasting, strict veganism, juicing or sugar-free baking — appear ‘healthy’ and ‘normal’ to the untrained eye. But according to sports dietician Wendy Sterling and licensed therapist Signe Darpinian, wellness culture is a key driver behind the high rates of disordered eating exhibited in teens and adults. Both Sterling and Darpinian have researched and worked on eating disorders extensively and co-authored a book on helping teens with eating disorders. “When food is neutral, when ice cream equals broccoli, your body really does have the tendency to crave what it needs versus what you’re not letting it have,” Darpinian said.

How to help teens have a peaceful relationship with food: Body image can be fraught for many. That doesn’t have to affect the kids in your life. "It’s important to know about actual warning signs around food and body image. Darpinian, Aggarwal, and Sterling say that they often hear parents of adolescents in treatment for full-blown eating disorders say that they didn’t initially recognize a problem because they thought their children were “just eating healthier and exercising more.”

Pacific alumna and licensed therapist Signe Darpinian '95 will release her second book, “Raising Body Positive Teens: A Parent’s Guide to Diet-Free Living, Exercise and Body Image,” in March 2022. “We're trying to do something more preventative (with this book) and teach parents how to provide protective factors in their home,” said Darpinian, something she says is a challenge since many parents have their own struggles with food and body image.

In this episode, Signe shares how her sequence of co-authored books came to be, the beauty of bringing all your experiences to the table, the diet culture horror film that was the 1980’s and the challenges that comes for 1980’s Gen X parents raising today’s teens, how witnessing diet culture (as well as participating) has impact, the benefits of boundaries and to finish up off, Signe shares the collective hope for parents who read the ‘Raising Body Positive Teens’ book.

Eating when feeling stressed has become a reality for many of us during these unsettling days, even among people who don't usually reach for food when feeling anxious. A Teen's Guide to Body Image, Food, and Emotional Wisdom."
